Chicken Shit

I was invited over to a jam session at my new boss's place tonight. Showed up and was imtimidated by everyone else's ability to play songs and sing. I can't do either, only little bits and pieces of songs. Guess I should learn a song, and maybe how to sing. It was still fun to listen to everyone sing and play. There was a lot of talent in that room.

Anal Bum Cover

Last night, we treated ourselves to what we anticipated would be a very good Saturday Night Live episode. We thought since Will Ferrell was hosting, he might give it that shot of adrenaline that it has needed for a long time. Nope. In fact, it was probably one of the worst SNL episodes we've ever seen. Even "Jeopardy!", which was always guaranteed to generate a few laughs, fell flat. The "Weekend Update" segment was even weaker. What happened, Will? Actually, it's probably not your fault, it's Horatio's. Ugh.

Thanks, craigslist! You've changed my life!

I'd forgotten to tell craigslist thank you for changing my life last month. I posted my resume on the website, and within two days, received an email from a prospective employer. On June 1st, that prospective employer will become my new boss. Take that, ! I shouldn't completely shun, as it was through them that I acquired the job that I'm now fleeing (actually, 5/25 was my last day).

From fas·cism n. often Fascism a. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism. b. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government. Oppressive, dictatorial control. I'm not being clever or original here; Liberals have been throwing this around for years. Free Inquiry Magazine outlines in much more detail, the characterization of a Fascist regime. Another short but interesting article online gives a bit of a different perspective: Is George Bush a Fascist? The article reminds us that Fascism is a historical movement, and does not simply mean "repression". It goes on to list some violent/repressive acts towards the working class by both Republican and Democratic administrations over the years. I would say there are hints of Fascis

Ant Killer

As someone who has leaned towards Buddhist teachings over the past few years, I've done a decent job of adhering to the precept that forbids killing any living being. I haven't killed a single person (alright, Rob!,) and have made a very good effort to avoid killing nuisance insects. Over the past two weeks, though, I've sprayed insecticide on three separate ant colonies, and watched as they suffered through what I can only imagine was a horrible, painful, death. This may seem trivial, or even silly to most people, but I'm actually quite disturbed by the fact that I committed what amounts to a genocide. I don't know what effect Raid™ actually has on an ant, but I suspect it involves the central nervous system, asphyxiation, or a combination of the two. Whatever the case, I don't take much delight in having eliminated these creatures from my home. The problem hasn't really gone away, either. Karma dictates that because I caused suffering, I in turn will suff

New Beginnings

Last Thursday evening, I received a job offer from a company that I'm excited about joining. I'll get the opportunity to grow as a developer, and I look forward to getting my hands on some new, exciting projects. At the same time, I'll miss my co-workers at my current company. I've grown to respect a lot of these people, and made some good friends. I don't think I've ever worked with such a hard-working, dedicated group of people.
